FAQs

Wedding Cancellation - Wedding Reception Cancellation

If you have to cancel your wedding and/or the reception, wedding insurance can help with the costs incurred from doing so.  It can also help with additional costs incurred from having to re-arrange certain aspects of the wedding day.  Cancellation cover can include unavailability of you, your partner, a close family member or relative being unable to attend due to serious illness or injury.  In regard to the reception, if the venue you have chosen is unavailable due to fire or flood, cover can be provided for that.  Another issue related to this is that of the vicar or minister being unable to officiate due to illness, injury or some other serious reason.  That may sound unbelievable but it can happen.

When settling a claim, the amount paid out will depend on what package or ‘tier’ you have chosen.  For example, some providers offer ‘Silver’, ‘Gold’, ‘Platinum’ and ‘Diamond’ types of cover which will cover the same full range of items, which you can choose according to your budget.

If your wedding is cancelled and there are costs which you cannot recover, say from suppliers (caterers, accommodation, transport etc) then your provider will cover these costs.  If your wedding is cancelled due to events beyond your control, then this will also be covered unless otherwise stated in your policy.  Check this carefully as you may have an exclusion clause.

There is usually an excess to pay with any claim, the amount being determined by your insurance provider.

A policy will not pay out if a wedding is cancelled due to reasons of the bride or groom getting ‘cold feet’ or simply changing their mind.  Other exclusions may include the policyholder not having sufficient funds although they will pay out if you or your partner are made compulsory redundant, after a policy has been issued.  You will need to qualify for payment under redundancy law.

Another exclusion is related to members of the Armed Forces: if either or both of you are members of the Armed Forces and are posted somewhere in the UK or aboard then this will not be covered unless it was unexpected at the time you took out the policy.
